Food Policy, 2022, vol. 112, issue C

Abstract: The European Geographical Indication quality scheme (GI) is supposed to enhance local expertise and support spatially-embedded products worldwide. Currently, the effect of GIs on trade is controversial. In general, GIs seem to support international trade, but the literature has not reached a consensus. We aim to identify and summarise heterogeneous results from existing research using a meta-analysis approach. Our results confirm that GIs positively affect trade, even after controlling for the effects of various characteristics of the studies, the methodology adopted, and publication impacts.
