On hydraulic tortuosity variations due to morphological considerations in 2D porous media by using the Lattice Boltzmann method

Abstract: Hydraulic tortuosity has shown a direct dependence on porosity. Determining the hydraulic tortuosity of porous media is relevant in a wide range of fields such as: biogas purification, analysis of aquifers and materials for energy storage and energy conversion. The fluid flow behavior through the porous media is obtained by using the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM), and then the hydraulic tortuosity is computed. In this study, 2D porous media are digitally created considering two different grain shapes, i.e., circles and squares, to evaluate the impact of the morphology on the hydraulic tortuosity. Based on the obtained results, a pair of tortuosity–porosity correlations is proposed to describe, in a better way, the fluid flow behavior through the porous media. In addition, it has been demonstrated that in the range of the analyzed porosities in the current study, the widely known Bruggeman correlation matches for only one porosity value.
