Abstract: Some software understanding concepts are first introduced. An example simulation understanding system, called E⧸Slam (Elucidation of SLAM II programs), is presented. E⧸Slam can generate statement templates to provide detailed information (including default values) for every occurrence of a statement type. Furthermore, it can generate program templates which provide problem-oriented information gleaned by the system from all relevant statements. Examples of statement and program templates generated by E⧸Slam to enhance understanding of simulation programs are given. The usefulness of any large or complex software can be enhanced by a program understanding system. The realization of program understanding systems is conceptually facilitated in fields such as simulation where appropriate methodologies exist, for example to specify models and experimental conditions.
