Diamagnetism of an electron gas and surface currents

Abstract: When an electron gas is submitted to a uniform magnetic field, the diamagnetic part of its magnetization is associated with amperian surface currents. In the weak-field limit, explicit expressions are found for the current density near an infinitely steep wall, and near a soft wall, for both Boltzmann and Fermi statistics. The Wigner distribution function in presence of a magnetic field is a convenient tool.
