An upper limit for thermoelectric birefringence in polar molecules

Abstract:
According to theoretical predictions, a heat conducting gas of polar molecules can become birefringent in the presence of an electric field. No effect could be detected, however, within the experimental uncertainties. An upper limit for the relevant production cross sections is presented.
