Abstract:
Introducing a simplified description of the smectic-A phase by a single particle distribution function of two variables we derive an integral equation which uniquely describes the smectic-A, nematic and isotropic phases of a liquid crystal. Using the potential for the interaction between two mono-axial molecules derived in a recent paper, we solve this equation. With the aid of this solution we calculate the order parameters which are convenient for the description of the phase transitions.
