Abstract:
Relationship between the two existing approaches to the sound attenuation and dispersion is discussed in detail for a fluid near the liquid-gas critical point. The statistical-mechanical definition of the frequency-dependent specific heat is given and the relaxation times entering one approach are related to those appearing in another approach. Recent theories are discussed in the light of the present work.
