U(1) factors in branching rules

Abstract:
Since U(1) is neither simple nor semisimple it has been excluded from most discussions and tabulations of group-subgroup branching rules. This situation is remedied here in the case of all those maximal regular subgroups of simple Lie groups which involve a factor U(1). The appropriate embeddings in both classical and exceptional Lie groups are completely specified and illustrative branching rules are exhibited.
