Grand unification and group theory: The Higgs problem

G. Girardi, A. Sciarrino and P. Sorba

Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications, 1982, vol. 114, issue 1, 370-388

Abstract: The central rôle of group theory in the search for a satisfactory renormalizable gauge theory to unify the theory of fundamental interactions (excluding gravity) is examined. The symmetry breaking needed to produce such theories and the consequent introduction of Higgs scalar particles is studied in detail.
