Abstract:
We propose a group-theoretical model for the nuclear breathing mode resonance. The algebra Sp(2, R) defines a boson that represents the volume vibration of the nucleon system. Our model space contains states of all number of bosons. The coherent states of Sp(2, R) have an indispensible part in the calculation of the Hamiltonian matrix elements. We find resonance energies for 16O and 40Ca in agreement with other models. We also find that the resonance state is essentially a one-boson state.
