Abstract:
We present a treatment of the Josephson tunnelling junction in terms of the theory of open systems based on the density operator approach. By invoking certain assumptions, we obtain the known results for the normal and super currents within the context of a weak-coupling damping theory (the calculation being facilitated by consideration of a ‘non-equilibrium’ Greens function). This success prompts us to reconsider the role of a weak-coupling damping theory in the study of open systems in general, and indicates the need for a formulation of non-equilibrium statistical mechanics that can encompass higher order damping theory.
