Abstract:
We discuss the general case of Feynman's variational approach to the collective excitations of quantum fluids. The variational procedure defines a prescription for describing any small amplitude hydrodynamic mode, with potential flow, in terms of an optimised wavefunction. The correpondence principle implies the existence of ground state correlations induced by the zero-point-motion of the excitations.
