Abstract:
The dispersion and damping of mean electromagnetic waves in a medium with fluctuating dielectric permitivity are considered. Further, a radiative transfer equation for the Stokes parameters is derived from the Bethe-Salpeter equation governing the mutual coherence function of the electric field. To this end, a procedure for scalar waves developed in two previous papers1.2) is extended to the electromagnetic case. By the use of CPA-like approximations the effective dispersion relation and effective scattering are calculated for long waves in a multicomponent mixture consisting of an irregular arrangement of nearly spherical grains. The results satisfy the optical theorem. The treatment also applies to strong heterogeneities.
