Energy and temperature fluctuations

John Stephenson

Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications, 1983, vol. 117, issue 2, 593-602

Abstract: Some elegant exact general relations between energy and temperature fluctuations are obtained in the context of the classical mechanics of two (sub)systems in thermal contact, which together form an isolated combined system. The results apply especially to: (i) a thermometer used to measure the temperature of a physical system of interest, and (ii) a system in contact with a large reservoir.
