Abstract:
An Ising model with two-spin interactions in one direction and four-spin interactions on the smallest plaquettes is investigated on the square lattice. The part of the two-spin interactions is essential to determine the nature of the phase transition of the model. The system with nearest-neighbour interactions has no phase transition, the one with next-nearest-neighbour interactions has a spontaneous magnetization and belongs to the same class of universality as the eight-vertex model, the one with third-neighbour interactions has no spontaneous magnetization but belongs to the same class of universality as Onsager's lattice, and so on.
