Abstract:
We study the effects of many body interaction potentials on the phase diagrams of binary FCC alloys. The alloy is modelled using a generalized Ising model which includes three and four body nearest neighbour interactions. We solve the model using a generalization of the Constant Coupling approximation with a four site tetrahedron as the basic cluster. The numerical results presented show that when competing many body interactions are present the phase diagrams may have several features found in experimental phase diagrams which cannot be predicted using a pure Ising model with only nearest neighbour pair interactions present. We compare our results with previous theoretical results and experimental results for the copper-gold alloy system.
