Sound propagation gaps from the navier-stokes equations

Abstract:
Using the Navier-Stokes equations for classical monatomic fluids as a model, it is shown that propagation gaps can occur in sound dispersion curves. As in kinetic theory, these gaps arise when dissipative forces interfere strongly with elastic forces.
