Abstract:
We pursue Schmidt's recent idea to generate Ising spin configurations via a hierarchical Monte Carlo procedure. The method is modified and improved, and applied to the two-dimensional Ising model at criticality. The system size dependence is investigated. For a 32×32 lattice the autocorrelation functions of the energy and the squared magnetization decay faster than with the standard method by a factor in the range of 3 to 10. On the basis of a number of plausible hypotheses we construct a theoretical framework within which the hierarchical method can be understood.
