Thermodynamic implications of various forms for the electromagnetic stress tensor are examined for polarizable media subject to an electromagnetic field. It is found that the Minkowski stress tensor for ponderable matter yields the simplest mathematical structure for constructing a theory of irreversible processes in ponderable matter.
