Abstract:
The Landau theory of Fermi liquids is reformulated by taking the thermodynamic potential, rather than the energy density, as the primary concept. This leads to a new definition of the quasiparticle interaction function which can be identified with the physical forward scattering amplitude of two quasiparticles. In addition, the new formalism provides a concise derivation of the Pomeranchuk stability conditions and the expressions for the response functions in the degenerate limit.
