Abstract:
A new model for the calculation of surface free energy in solids is proposed. Unlike the Kohn-Yaniv model, dislocation glide rather than cleavage is used to form new free surface. No ad-hoc assumptions are postulated in order to find the relation between surface free energy and the corresponding bulk elastic moduli. The agreement between calculated and experimental data is satisfactory and is within the error limits of experiment.
