Fluid-fluid, fluid-solid and three-phase equilibria in the system helium-hydrogen at pressures up to 75 kbar

Abstract:
The phase diagram of the system helium-hydrogen has been studied, using the diamond anvil cell technique, in a pressure range from 15 to 75 kbar and at temperatures from 110 up to 360 K. The fluid-fluid coexistence surface and, in particular, the position of the critical line has been determined. Good agreement is obtained with earlier work on He-H2 at lower pressures up to 9 kbar (W.B. Streett, Astrophys. J. 186 (1973) 1107). Also the three-phase line solid-fluid-fluid has been determined. The divergency of these lines persists up to the highest pressures and it is shown that the fluid-fluid equilibrium region extends to higher temperatures and higher pressures. Moreover, fluid-solid equilibria were studied and the existence of the predicted solid-solid-fluid equilibrium was confirmed.
