Some identities in isoperimetric problems in statistical mechanics and quantum mechanics

Abstract:
An identity is derived for the isoperimetric problem, which shows the close relation between the optimum value and the parameter involved in the constraint condition. The use of the identity is illustrated to finding the physical meaning of the Lagrange multipliers in the microcanonical theory of statistical mechanics. The identity is further generalized, and it is shown that the well-known Feynman theorem is a special case.
