Non-equilibrium electro-thermodynamics of polarizable multicomponent fluids with an interface

A.M. Albano and D. Bedeaux

Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications, 1987, vol. 147, issue 1, 407-435

Abstract: Non-equilibrium thermodynamics is applied to a multicomponent polarizable fluid consisting of two bulk phases which are separated by an interfacial region. Mass, charge, momentum, energy and entropy densities, their respective currents, as well as the electromagnetic fields and polarization and magnetization densities are all allowed to be singular at the dividing surface. Explicit expressions are given for the interfacial electromagnetic energy and momentum densities and currents. The interfacial ponderomotive force is given. The assumption of local equilibrium for the interfacial region is formulated, which enables one to derive expressions for the interfacial entropy production and current. This then leads to linear laws for the currents along, into, and through, the interfacial region as well as the interfacial polarization and magnetization densities.
