Abstract:
In this paper we discuss the various approaches to the problem of off-diagonal operators in atomic and nuclear physics. Most of these approaches have been based on the Schwinger algebra. Here, we propose a different way of incorporating generators of transitions between configurations. This is a consequence of the application of parity conjugation to tensor operators resulting in the classification of tensors either as axial or polar type. A specific choice of such generators which is in accord with selection rules is shown explicitly. A direct connection formula between these operators and the Schwinger tensor operators is also given.
