On the theory of oscillating-cup viscometers

Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications, 1988, vol. 149, issue 1, 107-122

Abstract: In this paper we re-examine the theory of a cylinder oscillating with a fluid contained inside the cylinder. The purpose of the analysis is to establish the feasibility of simultaneously determinig the viscosity and density from the observed damping and period of the oscillating cup. A comparison is made with the analysis in a previous publication [J.C. Nieuwoudt, J. Kestin and J.V. Sengers, Physica 142A (1987) 53] where we investigated the conditions under which the same goal can be accomplished from the measurement of the damped oscillating motion of a disk suspended in a fluid. The advantages and disadvantages of an oscillating cup versus an oscillating disk are discussed.
