Nuclear spin multiplet collapse in HD gas

Abstract:
We have observed in HD gas the onset of the collapse of the deuteron magnetic resonance spin doublet. This doublet results from the indirect (electron-coupled) nuclear spin-spin interaction. The collapse has been found at high temperatures and low densities where the inverse of the spin-lattice relaxation time of the coupled proton becomes comparable with J(HD)=43 Hz, the frequency separation of the doublet resonance lines.
