Abstract:
We derive effective medium theories for the optical properties of two-component composites where both components percolate. The theories depend explicitly on the pair and three-point correlation functions of the particle component. Specifically we consider the case of connected fractal aggregates. Effective medium calculations for fractal aggregates are compared to far infrared experiments on gas evaporated aggregates of oxide-coated Al particles. The experimental far infrared absorption is a factor of two higher than the theoretical prediction.
