Abstract:
We analyze the dielectric and conductivity properties of a metal-insulator composite close to the insulator-metal transition. Using the effective medium approximation it is possible to predict the existence of an optical threshold at a concentration p∗ higher than the percolation threshold pc. At that concentration which depends on dimensionality and on the relaxation time τ, we show that the composite behaves as pure resistor and its conductivity is constant up to the optical frequences. This result is quite general and can be obtained using a generalization of the percolation scaling laws to a mixture of inductors and capacitors.
