Comparison between different markov approximations for open spin systems

Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications, 1989, vol. 158, issue 3, 769-783

Abstract: Various Markov approximations obtained from the Zwanzig-Nakajima and the memoryless master equations are investigated. In particular, considering a simple model (spin-12 in a magnetic field and coupled to a reservoir), we discuss the convergence behaviour and the positivity of these approximations. It is found that a well-known positivity preserving Markov generator, introduced in the rigorous study of the weak coupling limit, does not necessarily represent a good approximation for physically relevant times, especially if the system is nearly degenerate.
