On the linear response treatment of condensed matter absorption processes

C.A. Chatzidimitriou-Dreismann

Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications, 1989, vol. 159, issue 1, 109-122

Abstract: The interaction of condensed systems with weak external radiation fields at thermal frequencies, ω ∼ kBTh̷, is considered. Van Vliet's statement concerning the absence of dissipation in standard linear response theory is confirmed explicitly. The connection of this result with the conventional analysis of spectroscopic band shapes in terms of time correlation functions is discussed in some detail. It is shown that the widely used formula for this band-shape analysis is intrinsically connected with the adiabatic or the sudden approximation for the dynamics of the system's coupling operator with the external field. For illustration, the physical context of far-infrared absorption in polar liquids is discussed shortly.
