Abstract:
We present a new approximation scheme for dealing with the statistical mechanics of homogeneous and inhomogeneous systems. This new self-consistent method, based on a rigorous variational principle for the free energy, treats on equal footing the average order parameter and the fluctuations about it. It requires the choice of a trial Hamiltonian that defines an ensemble through which the thermodynamic averages can be calculated. In the present paper we apply the method to calculate the bulk phase diagram of a system described by the φ4 Hamiltonian.
