Screened dislocation free energy in a molten solid

Abstract:
In this work we calculate the free energy of a gas of planar dislocations in the presence of stress-field fluctuations in an elastic medium. We show that, near melting, the Helmholtz free energy density develops a straight-line dependence on the dislocation parameter signalling the existence of a discontinuous phase transition.
