Thermodynamics of mesoscopic soft modes in strongly disturbed lattices

Max Wagner and Theodor Mougios

Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications, 1990, vol. 166, issue 2, 229-262

Abstract: A generalized Lifshitz procedure is developed, which allows the evaluation of frequency densities in mesoscopically disturbed harmonic lattices. Archetypical examples are calculated explicitly. In particular it is shown that lattice softening at mesoscopically distant sites produces a low-frequency enhancement of the increase in mode density, which may be ascribed to the oscillation of mesoscopically large masses. Possible relevance for the anomalous low-temperature behaviour of amorphous systems is discussed.
