Proton exchange activity as a probe for solitons in RNA

Abstract:
We find conclusive evidence on the existence of coherent solitary wave excitations in RNA by analyzing the enhancement of proton exchange activity of RNA by means of phononic excitations. We prove that the discommensuration travelling along the backbone in the form of a domain wall is coupled to a tautomerization of uracil bases via the activation of the 2′-hydroxyl of the ribose.
