Effective medium theory of diffusion and chemical reaction in the presence of stationary sinks

Abstract:
We calculate the effective reaction rate constant k∗ and the effective diffusion constant D∗ for a system of randomly distributed imperfect spherical sinks. Imperfect means in this context that the surface reaction rate is finite. We use an effective medium theory presented in a previous paper (Physica A 166 (1990) 206). An application of our model to steady state fluorescence quenching shows perfect agreement with the experimental data reported by Peak et al. (J. Chem. Phys. 79 (1983) 3328).
