Abstract:
A review of recent theoretical and experimental work on lyotropic membrane systems is presented. We describe methods which access quantitatively membrane properties such as flexibility and interactions by using lamellar phases. We show that the smectic elastic constants which are directly related to microscopic behavior can be extracted from the scattering profile. The effect of the fluctuations are important at several levels: for short wavelengths they give rise to repulsive steric interactions (undulation forces), while at larger wavelengths they contribute to the structure factor measured by X-ray or neutron scattering.
