Condensation and ordering of colloidal spheres dispersed in a ferrofluid

Abstract:
Polystyrene spheres of the same size (1–100 μm) dispersed in a ferrofluid produce voids, which have been denoted magnetic holes. This represents a magnetic analogue of Archimedes' principle in that the magnetic moment of one sphere (hole) is equal to the magnetic moment of the ferrofluid displaced by the sphere.
