On the maintenance of disorder

Abstract:
We review the mechanisms giving rise to asymptotic freedom in spin and gauge systems. We then attempt to clarify the more difficult problem of the approach to disorder at long distances (confinement for gauge systems). Whereas the spin problem can be handled with a modicum of confidence, gauge systems remain essentially unsolved.
