Abstract:
We examine the screened Coulomb interactions for quasiparticles near the Fermi surface of isotropic metals and determine a semiquantitative best fit to the Hubbard model. Does such a fit exist for a layered metal (a stack of 2D conductors) in which screening currents do not flow easily from plane to plane? The answer again, is yes. Although they are not necessarily repulsive, the screened interplanar forces are, in fact, generally negligible.
