Characterization of violent fluctuations by interval distributions of level sets

Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications, 1993, vol. 197, issue 3, 371-378

Abstract: Different types of interval distributions of level sets are observed in systems having violent fluctuations: time series of earthquake magnitudes, spatial mass fluctuations of an aggregating system, and time series of energy dissipation rates in atmospheric turbulence. For turbulence, a new scaling relation is found and the interval distribution agrees with a theoretical estimate for binomial multifractal measure. Also, the aggregation system is shown to have a scaling property.
