Cluster expansion method in the theory of equilibrium properties of a gas of atoms of which a part is excited

Abstract:
A gas of identical atoms of which some are in an excited electronic state is considered. The lifetime of the excited state is to a great extent larger than the time of establishing the equilibrium over translational degrees of freedom, which permits one to study the equilibrium gas properties for the given state of the electronic subsystem. The difficulty of such a study is caused by the appearance, in the system of differently excited identical atoms, of an essentially many-particle effective interaction - resonance interaction. For the calculation of the equilibrium properties the cluster expansion method is being developed. In this framework the contributions of groups of an increasingly large number of atoms are taken into account successively. In this way the virial state equation and the pair spatial distribution function with the accuracy up to the contributions from three-particle groups are obtained. The obtained results are compared with generally known results. The problem of the influence of excited atoms on the gas-liquid phase transition is discussed.
