Abstract:
The bcc and hcp lattice structures have been observed in a colloidal plasma system using an optical microscope. The colloidal plasma consists of a weakly ionized Ar plasma and micron size SiO2 particles generated through chemical reaction between SiH4 and O2 gases. These particles are negatively charged and suspended in the plasma, and form a strongly coupled Coulomb system. The formation and melting of the Coulomb lattice by properly adjusting the system parameters are reported and discussed.
