Fluctuations in a nonequilibrium colloidal suspension

Abstract:
Thermal fluctuations in monodisperse colloidal suspensions are investigated on the basis of a linear Langevin approach including nonlocal and memory effects. Special emphasis is laid on suspensions that are driven into a nonequilibrium steady state by pumping the solvent through semipermeable walls. At finite pumping rates, the fluctuations in the colloidal number density are shown to develop correlations of long range. This leads to an enhancement of light scattering and it is suggested to use this effect to measure the (wavevector and frequency dependent) effective viscosity.
