Infrared emissivity of inhomogeneous media

G. Fardella and S. Berthier

Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications, 1994, vol. 207, issue 1, 346-351

Abstract: A method for studying the emissivity of inhomogeneous media in which the wavelength and the particle diameters are comparable, is proposed. We have extended the classical Mie theory in order to take into account the absorption of the embedding medium. A multiple scattering model based on the radiative transfer theory then allows to evaluate the spectral and directional apparent emissivity of an absorbing layer containing polydisperse scatterers. The calculation is performed in two situations of experimental interest: (1) absorbing porous media and (2) strong-scattering systems made of metal spheres embedded in an absorping polymer.
