Spinodal decomposition in quenched correlated fields

Abstract:
We study how the spinodal decomposition of A + B mixture is affected when a small number of frozen impurity atoms are randomly distributed among the mixture and impose a field to their surroundings so as to favor species A in their vicinity. The correlated field is taken into account with a field term in the Landau-Ginzburg free energy functional. The resultant Cahn-Hilliard equation is solved numerically. We discuss the domain morphology, and the pattern of the liquid structure factor in the small wave vector limit. This study was motivated by recent experiments with binary liquids in extremely dilute gels.
