Dynamical ensembles in statistical mechanics

Abstract: A distribution function, using dynamical weights, proposed previously to describe statistical mechanical systems in stationary states, is discussed from a physical point of view. The distribution function correctly describes certain large current fluctuations far from equilibrium, observed in two computer simulations, which model a shearing fluid and a conducting solid, respectively.
