Abstract:
We investigate the stability of nonlinear optical modes with frequencies inside the forbidden gap of the linear dispersion relation, so-called gap solitons, by means of a linear stability analysis and show numerically that it is strongly influenced by the system size. Applying suitable boundary conditions, we determine oscillatory instabilities of infinite systems. Numerical instabilities explain the breakdown of simulations in otherwise stable parameter regions.
