Segregation of granular mixtures in a rotating drum

Sanjay Puri and Hisao Hayakawa

Physica A: Statistical Mechanics and its Applications, 2001, vol. 290, issue 1, 218-242

Abstract: We formulate a phenomenological model for the segregation of binary mixtures of granular materials with different roughness in a rotating drum. Our model successfully replicates a range of experimental behaviours, e.g., rapid radial segregation; slow axial segregation; and nonuniform radial structure of axial bands. We present some analytical results and detailed numerical results for our model.
