Membrane crumpling and restricted swelling in onion phases

Abstract:
We have observed a deviation from one-dimensional swelling behaviour in onion phases. This is explained in terms of crumpling of each membrane due to its flexibility together with a lateral membrane tension which depends on the degree of dilution.
